Emergency Food Preparedness

An important part of emergency preparedness is the ability to store your food during a power outage. If an emergency occurs, the electric power will not be available. If you want to protect yourself from such situation, it is recommended to store foods that do not require cooling. Your emergency food storage should include canned foods, dried foods and any other types of food that do not require freezing to keep them ready to eat.
It is obvious that sooner or later each house experiences power outage. That is why it is extremely important to get prepared to such situation and to know how to keep your food unspoiled. One of the possible options is to get freeze-pack inserts. They could be bought at any store. You should keep them frozen until they are needed. The same way you could use plastic bottles or milk jugs of water. Freeze them and leave in the freezes. Bags of ice also work well for keeping the cold inside the freezer.
Another option is to find out where dry ice could be purchased. If a power outage occurs, you will be able to drive there and get as much ice as you need. A good idea is to keep some of your frozen food at your friends’ house in another part of the town. They might not experience a power outage the same time as you, so you will be able to protect your foods.
If your house has lost electric power, keep the refrigerator’s doors tightly shut. Do not open them frequently. Open your fridge only if it is absolutely necessary. If your freezer is full and if you keep it shut, your food will remain frozen for no less than two days. But if your freezer is just half loaded, your food will remain frozen for about twenty four hours.
If you know that there will be no power for the next several days, the only possible option for you is to get dry ice. 25 pounds of dry ice are able to keep your food frozen inside the freezer for as long as two or three days. Just make sure you always put gloves on when handling dry ice. Make sure your skin does not contact with dry ice as it might be dangerous. You should also make sure that the dry ice does not burn food packages inside the freezer. To avoid this put a cardboard or anything else like this between the ice and the food.
And do not forget that you will be able to preserve your frozen food even without electricity. But you need to be prepared to such an emergency and then it will not be that difficult to survive.
