Getting Ready To Winter Emergencies
All seasons are great and there are a lot exciting things to do both in winter and in summer. However, we should also remember that each season could bring certain emergencies with it. And speaking about winter we need to be prepared to freezing temperatures, ice storms, heavy snow and many more.
Everyone is usually excited about the first snowfall. However, even two inches of snow are enough to create serious problems on the roads.
Blizzards are snow storms with strong winds that make cars stuck in the snow. Snow falls with more than twelve inches of snow could lead to severe power outage and roof breakage. Sometimes trees could also fall down under the weight of snow and wind. Such trees may also block high ways and break the power lines.
If you want to protect your family from winter emergencies you need to spend just a couple of hours. However, these few hours could make a huge difference if you actually face an emergency.
Make sure you have at least one month supply of food and drinking water for all your family members. It is recommended to choose dry food or canned food for emergency purposes. Your disaster foods should be non-perishable and should not require freezing.
If there is a power outage in your neighborhood you need to turn off all electronic equipment around your house including the lights. One light could be left on in order to indicate if power gets restored. You should also turn the heating system in your house down to minimum. Do not open your freezer and your fridge without absolute necessity.
If you need to cook food, do not use camping equipment inside your house. They produce carbon monoxide which is toxic. When using candles, make sure you have proper candle holders. Keep candles out of reach of your children. And you should never leave burning candles over night.
If there are damaged power wires near your house or on the ground, call your local electric company and do not get closer than 10 meters to the wires.
You need to have a cordless radio for emergency purposes. Listen to it regularly to make sure you get all important information from your local authorities.
It is not recommended to ravel in harsh winter weather. Each accident could have serious negative outcomes. If you must go somewhere, make sure your tank is full of gas and that you have good winter tires. Check the weather forecast before you leave.
Your car should also be prepared to winter. Some few steps will eliminate the risk of accidents on winter roads. You need to check the oil and antifreeze in your car regularly. Snow blades and snow tires will also be beneficial.
